Marilyn Hellman, owner of chic Fifth Avenue South boutique Marilyn's, has a strong opinion about high heels: She loves them. If you're buying only one new pair of shoes this season, go as high as you can handle. The look will flatter your legs, she explains. Also, leave the basics behind and step into something spectacular.
"Any good outit really starts with a statement shoe," she says. She also suggests not bothering to buy the style of shoe that dominates a shop's shelves. Recession-proof fashion isn't about wearing what's popular, Hellman counsels; it's about wearing what works, and about taking your own special sartorial stance.
"Don't be afraid to accessorize slightly ouside your conventional comfort zone, she continues. Acquire new pieces with an eye to what's versatile, such as long and short necklaces that can be worn together or separately to create various looks."
Featured items: Black double strapped slide with red flowers by Belen Donate (Spain), red suede open toe pump by Laura Armat (Spain), white blouse by Difference, lace with tucked bib front, double rhinestone bracelelt, bangle studded bracelet

Article "Eclectic Style" by Kathy Becker
Excerpt From Article"
Marilyn Hellman is hands-on. She does the buying for her one-year-old Fifth Avenue South fashion emporium, Marilyn’s European Shoes & Accessories, and when she’s not on a buying trip, she’s most often at the store. She wouldn’t have it any other way, since her name is on the door.
Her love of fashion, and retail, was instilled early when her mother owned a Minnesota consignment shop, where she would help select items brought by clients. “I had to pick what I thought would sell,” she says.
Her home environment was very formal. “I came from good taste,” she says. “We ate in the dining room.”
Most recently, she worked as a buyer in Barrington, Illinois, for a wardrobing service, where people would buy a whole wardrobe in a process that took many hours.
“I wanted something more open,” she says. “Where people could find unique items, and I would help them pull it together with things they already had.”
Those experiences combined to give Hellman a love of retail, an eye for what sells, connections with smaller European artisans and an eclectic style. “I try to find designers who don’t go to the shows,” she says. “My stuff is very different.”
For example, she found an Italian craftsman who has a special process to fuse fabric and Lucite into unique handbags and bangles. Another artisan she found shapes Venetian glass into tendrils to make stunning one-of-a-kind jewelry.
She specializes in white blouses and European accessories, from shoes to jewelry.
She has also worked hard to be innovative and service-oriented. When someone suggested she package the dried fruit mix she keeps in the store for shoppers, she decided to put together a special bag of fruit to sell during the holidays. During the summer she started a series of casual seminars on various topics, kind of like an informal social gathering with girlfriends, fashion talk and champagne."

"Marilyn has her own ideas about trends, fashion, buying and what women should have in their wardrobes"
Excerpts from the magazine:
"...Marilyn chose a more open environment for her store. She designed the whole store around the customer's shopping comfort. Marilyn feels it's all about trying to find things customers will use and enjoy wearing. More and more trends are being set by women and not the fashion designers....The days of buying a whole look from one designer is fading and being replaced by a collection of creative individual pieces by many designers. (Marilyn) buys with a sharp eye for good taste and special item pieces that you won't see anywhere else. "It's personal", Marilyn says, "I enjoy helping women find the right accessory for their wardrobes."
